Monday

It's Monday! Happy second week of school. Today we'll be learning all about how to properly take care of and use our devices.

Goal: Students care for school devices properly.

Say: This week you will be receiving your netbooks or iPads. Innovation Middle is one one of the few schools in San Diego that lets students take their devices home and provides internet access. With this awesome privilege, comes great responsibility. It is easy, yet important to take excellent care of your school-provided device.

One minute video: Care for your Device.

1. All Grades: Review the prezi

2. Have students take the following quiz. Afterward, review the quiz and give time for any clarifying questions students may have about the prezi or anything generally regarding proper care and use of their devices.

Announcements and Reminders: The Lunch Laws
Where to eat: Students are allowed to eat lunch outside in the space between the cafeteria and in front of the library. Food is not allowed inside of the library. Students may be in a classroom ONLY with a pass from the teacher.
Playing Sports: Students that are interested in participating in the lunchtime sports need to access them from the bungalows (not the library). Everyone who wants to play can play, but must not bring water or food onto the courts.
Restrooms: Please use the restrooms that are located in the middle of the lunch area, nearest the science building.
Sharing is caring! If you have food for lunch that you do not want (a pack of carrots, an apple, a twinkie) please place it on the Sharing Table by the cafeteria window. All food items on this table are up for grabs and can be taken by any student or staff member.

Erase Meanness Activities for Today and Tomorrow
Did you know that tomorrow is Worldwide Erase Meanness Pledge Day? Sixth grade teacher, Eric Johnson, founded the Erase Meanness campaign in 2012 to battle against the mean behaviors that occurred in his classroom. Today, over 12,000 students worldwide have joined in this movement to end bullying, rumors, and mean behaviors at school. Help us erase meanness here at iMiddle for all students. Come to the flag pole TOMORROW during lunch to help us erase MEANNESS by replacing the words on this board with words of KINDNESS. (scroll down for today's activity)

ACTIVITY FOR TODAY:
Take the Erase Meanness Pledge today on the pledge sheets provided by the Counseling Center and tell us what you intend to do this year to keep iMiddle a safe, mean-free place to be. Share your ideas as a class.

Teachers: Please collect these sheets and send them to the Counseling Center along with any hi-five hands you have from last week's activity.

Goal: Students reflect on their media use

Media Diet

Say: "Let's go on a mental journey through a day in our media lives. Think about your average day using digital media and to respond silently to the questions:

What digital media you use...
  • When you first get out of bed.
  • Do you check to see if you have text messages?
  • Do you watch TV or listen to MP3s in the morning?
  • What do you do with digital media as you are going to school?
  • During the school day, do you use digital media for class or for entertainment? How so?
  • What do you do after school? Do you use digital media for their homework, to socialize with others, or to gather information? Do you multitask, using two or more forms of digital media at the same time?

After reflecting on our mental media journey, make the following chart. When you complete the chart, compare with your peers and share out.

Reflection Questions for the day
  • What forms of digital media do group members seem to use least?
  • Who in the group appears to spend the most time with digital media overall?
  • Are there aspects of your classmates’ media lives that you found particularly interesting?
  • In comparison to others in the class, would you characterize your media intake as low, high, or somewhere in between?
  • Based on the media logs that you made, is there anything you would change about your media habits?
  • What if you went on a media fast? (That means you stopped using digital media for a few days.)

Bonus questions:

1. TJ uses digital media more than any of his friends. Sometimes TJ is online by himself while his friends are hanging out together. One downside to using digital media the way TJ does is that he might:

a) Have more online friends than most people

b) Miss out on having fun with people in person

c) Share comments online

2. A is a regular behavior or practice

a) habit

b) ceremony

c) chore

Social Media Video http://mbc.sandi.net/library/463559

Ask: Why do you use social media the amount that you do?

The following video describes four main reasons why people are addicted to video games, but it can be applied to all types of social media.

Optional 6-minute video: Escaping video game addiction: Cam Adair at TEDxBoulder
  • Debrief: How do your use of social media and/or games reflect those of the speaker?
